Our Verdict: Kimoe Mealworms
The beautiful thing about Kimoe Mealworms is it provides your favorite wild birds with an immense boost of energy because they’re jam-packed with plentiful amounts of protein and healthy fats.
Believe it or not, this particular brand was specifically designed to avoid using genetically modified organisms, which are otherwise known as GMOs. This is the first reason why these mealworms caught my attention.
Guess what?
Kimoe took things a step further and avoided adding dust, preservatives, or additives to the mealworms too. Other companies like to add fillers to pad their pockets at your expense, but this company doesn’t do this and they never would as far as I can tell.
On a side note…
You will find the occasional beetle mixed in with the mealworms. You aren’t going to discover an overwhelming amount, so they aren’t trying to take advantage of you. But beetles are present from time to time nonetheless.
I also believe these are the best mealworms because of how they are grown. The environment is sterile and clean and very safe. So, the mealworms grow to a healthy size in an environment that is conducive to vigor and longevity.

In all honesty, this was the toughest comparison and testing out of all of the bird seeds and types of bird food that I tested recently.
Why?
Kimoe Mealworms are absolutely phenomenal. There is no doubt about it. But the other mealworms that I tested are almost just as amazing.
Which products did I test alongside this one?

I evaluated each product for two weeks before moving on to the next one. And as I compared each of the products, I came to discover that two of them were incredibly popular with my favorite wild backyard birds.
Ultimately, they both provided ample freshness, nutrition, and energy. And all the birds seemed to love them too.
The main reason I chose Kimoe Mealworms over Picky Neb is because my favorite online retailer considers them the “best choice” in the category mealworms, which definitely carries added weight with me and it should carry it with you too.
The testing and analysis went as follows…
Energy
For the category Energy, I gave Kimoe Mealworms the highest score possible and designated them a 100 out of 100. Believe it or not, this is a tie with 5 other products.
But it shouldn’t seem too shocking at the same time because I always recommend the best products to my readers.
Anyway…
I gave this product a 100 out of 100 because of two very specific reasons that include:
It contains 25% crude fat in the form of Omega-3 fatty acids. These fatty acids are very healthy and necessary to the survival and longevity of backyard wild birds. They also deliver ample amounts of energy to birds that really need it because of how much energy they expend flapping their wings.
It contains nearly 50% protein. As we know, protein is the main building block that ultimately leads to excellent health and well-being. Feeding backyard birds such a potent source of protein means they will lead long and happy lives because they have access to the best readily available nutrients that they wouldn’t normally get in the wild.
As I mentioned, the Picky Neb and Kaytee mealworms also contain the same levels of fat and protein. So, this factor pretty much evened the score amongst all of them.
How the Kimoe Non-GMO Dried Mealworms stacks up in the energy ratings:
Freshness
As far as Freshness is concerned, I ranked these mealworms with an 80 out of 100 score, which is still a very good score but on the lower end of the spectrum.
Why did I lower their score?
Although I didn’t personally have this problem, during the research phase I discovered that a few customers were unhappy because they received crumbling and stale mealworms. Obviously, this is going to happen from time to time and thankfully it doesn’t seem to happen too often.
On the other hand, I discovered that Kaytee had the most freshness problems and Picky Neb had the least, with Kimoe Mealworms nestled right in the middle of the pack.
Personally, I did not come across any old, crumbly, or stale mealworms. As a matter of fact, they come to you already dried, which means the people that bought them may not have even known that they were intentionally sent to them this way.
So, I’m not going to vilify a product completely based on research because I do not know these people personally. But I wanted to bring this minor issue to your attention nonetheless.
How the Kimoe Non-GMO Dried Mealworms stacks up in the freshness ratings:
Messiness
In the area of Messiness, I also awarded this product with an 80 out of 100 score, which is the second highest score because I didn’t award any of the other products with a 100 out of 100.
But…
The Kimoe Mealworms, like the mealworms from Kaytee and Picky Neb, did create somewhat of a mess, at least temporarily.
The way I feed mealworms to birds is I scatter them on the floor throughout my backyard. Obviously, it’s going to be messy for a little while until all of the birds eat the mealworms.
Some people like to feed them using a tray feeder or a platform feeder and I do the same as well from time to time. But my preferred method has always been to scatter them on the ground and leave them there for the birds, which is somewhat of a messier option.
I probably could have given this product a 9 out of 10 since I’m technically the one creating the mess! But that isn’t how I scored it and there’s no turning back now!
Still, an 80 out of 100 is definitely a highly respectable score and one that I believe you will appreciate.
How the Kimoe Non-GMO Dried Mealworms stacks up in the messiness ratings:
Nutrient Quality
I awarded the Kimoe Mealworms with a highly respectable score of 90 out of 100. This score places this product in a 5-way tie for second place.
Why did I feel the need to knock off 1 point?
To put it bluntly, I had to knock off 1 point because this product doesn’t really contain any fiber or moisture, which are also necessary components to a healthy diet for backyard birds.
And why would it?
Remember, this is an animal product, and as we know, animal products do not really contain fiber. And they contain even less water. But the protein and fat content definitely make up for these lacking nutrients.
Overall, the nutrient profile consists of:
- 47% Protein
- 6% Fiber
- 25% Fat
- 5% Moisture
As you can see, there is very little moisture and fiber content. But it contains a ton of great healthy protein and even healthier fats in the form of Omega-3 fatty acids.
You can always mix the mealworms with wild bird seeds to complete the nutrient profile and get lots of healthy fiber into the diet of your favorite backyard birds.
How the Kimoe Non-GMO Dried Mealworms stacks up in the nutrient quality ratings:
Taste & Enjoyment
This may seem surprising, but I ranked this product with a 75 out of 100 score after comparing it to other bird feed products.
Why didn’t it get a 100 out of 100?
I only lowered the score for one reason and one reason alone. Not all backyard birds seem to enjoy eating mealworms. This holds true for every one of the products that I tested including the ones from Kaytee and Picky Neb.
So…
That’s the reason I lowered the score.
But at the same time, I can actually tell you that out of the three products that I tested, the Kimoe Mealworms were the biggest hit. The birds that did eat them couldn’t get enough of them.
I have to say that just watching them was a real treat. They really seemed to enjoy gobbling up these delicious mealworms. And since I know they pack such a powerful energetic punch, I was happy to see the birds consuming this healthy and nutritious meal so readily.

Is It Safe For Ducks To Eat Mealworms?
Yes, I am happy to tell you that it’s very safe for ducks to eat Kimoe Mealworms or any other mealworms for that matter. As a matter of fact, I’ve read that many duck owners have given their ducks these mealworms and they haven’t personally noticed any negative issues.
Believe it or not, the ducks seem to really love eating mealworms and they consider them a tasty treat. So, if you have any concerns, I would lay them to rest because it seems that ducks like them, they tolerate them well, and they will not get sick from eating them.
Will Chickens Contract Marek’s Disease From Eating Mealworms?
Simply put, there is some evidence that Marek’s disease can be transmitted from mealworms and darkling beetles. Personally, I do not know anyone that has fed their chickens mealworms and ultimately discovered that their flock had come down with Marek’s.
But if this is a serious concern – and it undoubtedly should be – you may want to exercise maximum caution and avoid feeding mealworms to your chickens.
I wouldn’t go this far because I do not believe this would happen, but again, everyone has to trust their instincts and if your instincts are telling you to stay away from mealworms then that’s likely the best course of action for you personally.
Will Mealworms Attract Bluebirds & Blue Jays To My Backyard?
Truth be told, nearly every bird that comes into contact with Kimoe Mealworms seem to love them a great deal because they always gobble them up. I’ve noticed an increase of the Eastern bluebird, Blue jay, and Scrub jay eating and enjoying this delicious protein source.
Also, if you’re really desperate to attract blue jays to your backyard, they seem to really love suet, black oil sunflower seeds, cracked corn, and whole peanuts or peanut pieces. You can feed them on a large tray, using a platform feeder, or a tube feeder depending on what you have on hand. Even scattering them on the ground will frequently attract blue jays.
