From an analysis standpoint, I can say that the testing and comparisons between the three products that I looked at went relatively smoothly. But the birds certainly liked all three of these products to a degree, so it wasn’t always easy picking the winner.
Most important of all, I evaluated each of these products fairly. And as I said earlier, I let the birds try out each one for two weeks before I moved on to the next brand.
By waiting two weeks, this gave me sufficient opportunities to watch the birds closely and see how they reacted to each brand that I shared with them on any given day.

Energy
It really shouldn’t surprise anyone to learn that beef fat packs a powerful punch! And it’s for this reason that I rated Wildlife Sciences Suet with a flawless 100 out of 100 score for Energy.
It may not sound appealing to human beings – or maybe it does – but the birds are capable of deriving a ton of extra energy from this healthy fat. And even better, they can store this fat on their body and use it during the colder winter months when food might be scarcer.
At least in the wild, but this isn’t the case at my house! I always leave plenty of food for the birds even though there aren’t too many hanging around during the winter.
Getting back on track…
As I said, beef fat contains a lot of energy. But that isn’t the only energetic ingredient in this formula either. These suet cakes are also made with black oil sunflower seeds, which also contains healthy oils and fats in the form of omega-3 fatty acids.
And let’s not forget about the grain byproducts and cracked corn, which provides an extra energetic push that helps these birds fly around my backyard with lightning speed!

In the Freshness department, Wild Sciences Suet also delivered great results so I gave this product a 90 out of 100 rating. This isn’t a perfect rating by any means, but 90 out of 100 is still phenomenal if you ask me.
Why did I knock a point off of my score?
I read a post from an unhappy customer and because I’m trying to be fair and balanced while writing these reviews, I had to mark it as a strike against Wildlife Sciences. I also had to share this information with you in full disclosure.
You see, one of the reviews that I read online said they bought these suet cakes from Wildlife Sciences and the customer believed she received old products that were stale and lying around the warehouse for a long time.
Can she prove this? Not exactly. But at the same time, she can use her vision and other senses to see if a product is stale or not.
So, if she said the suet cakes were stale, I’m going to believe her because she didn’t actually have anything to gain by sharing this story with the world.
Other than that, I personally didn’t suffer from any freshness difficulties and I didn’t read about other customers having these issues either.

Messiness
From the perspective of Messiness, I gave this product a decent rating of 90 out of 100, which is actually a five-way tie for the highest rating that I gave in this category.
What does this mean?
It means that when you look at this product where messiness is concerned, it isn’t very messy at all. As a matter of fact, this is a melt-resistant formula which means the suet cake sticks together and rarely breaks up and crumbles or falls all over the place.
Can I say the same for the other products that I reviewed? Unfortunately, I cannot.
Both Brown’s Garden Chic High Energy Suet and Blue Seal Premium Orange Suet Cake had messy moments from time to time. They didn’t constantly break up or fall apart but it happened every so often.
The good thing is the birds really love these suet cakes so they usually manage to find the scraps that fall on the floor and eat them before you need to clean them up anyway.
But this category is about messiness. And Wildlife Sciences Suet was the clear winner in my opinion.

For Nutrient Quality, I gave this product a very generous 85 out of 100 rating and I certainly stand by my decision.
What made me lower the score a little?
The overall nutrient profile was a little skewed in my opinion, although it definitely contains a healthy amount of tasty ingredients.

4% Protein
Believe it or not, it’s the 4% protein content that has me a little concerned. Birds need more protein than this in order to survive and thrive. So, you’d benefit by giving your backyard birds an additional product with more protein like Kaytee Nut & Fruit Blend to add extra protein to their diet.
Other than that, the birds who eat this tasty food are going to buzz with tons of energy from all of the healthy fat in this product. Not only do they get great tasting fat from the rendered beef suet, the sunflower seeds also add healthy Omega-3s to their diet.

Overall, I rated Wildlife Sciences Suet with a full 80 out of 100 rating in the category titled Taste & Enjoyment.

First off, an 80 out of 100 rating is really respectable in my opinion. Most products aren’t perfect so you aren’t going to find too many 10 out of 10s in most cases anyway.
But as far as this product is concerned…
The birds that like to eat it absolutely love it. But it’s one of those products that is only enjoyed by certain types of birds, which is why I lowered the overall score.
Insect eating birds are big fans of beef fat. So, this formula is going to attract titmice, chickadees, wrens, woodpeckers, and nuthatches.
Other birds like grackles and starlings will typically avoid this food source because they aren’t very fond of rendered beef fat for whatever reason.
But overall, most birds do seem to enjoy this healthy treat from time to time.

Do Wildlife Sciences Suet Cakes Melt?
I’m happy to report that under no circumstances have I ever had these suet cakes begin to suddenly melt on me. They never melted in the rain or any other situation for that matter.
So, if you’re afraid that the rain is going to melt them because you live in Seattle or another rainy city, you have nothing to fear. This suet cake holds together very well and water isn’t going to break it down into smaller less manageable components.
The birds get to have their suet cake and eat it too! It tastes great, they love it, and it doesn’t melt from rain, which is a wonderful combination to behold.
How Often Is It Necessary To Change Suet Cakes?
Believe it or not, I actually had to look this question up because I’ve never had to change suet cakes since the birds gobble it up so quickly. But if you live in an area that doesn’t have a lot of birds and your suet hangs around for a while, it’s best to change it every 5-7 days.
Why does it need to be changed?
If you leave it out too long, it could end up developing bacteria, bugs, or mold. And if you leave it in your feeder and mold or bacteria growth begins, you’ll unintentionally ruin your feeder and turn it into an unhealthy breeding ground that will be dangerous for your favorite wild birds.
Obviously, you want your feeders to remain safe and healthy for your winged friends. And you only want to feed them healthy foodstuffs, which means you should throw out old suet cakes and change them every 5-7 days to avoid the potential health consequences mentioned above.
